Probably when you learned lesson 9 you noticed a difference between "to have" and "у меня есть".

There is a word "Иметь" that literally means "to have". You can say Я имею, ты имеешь, он имеет, мы имеем, вы имеете, они имеют". Native speakers almost never say so, only in very

rare cases.

У меня есть - literally means "at me is", and more correct - "there is at me" - I have.У тебя есть - "there is at you" - You have.

and so on.

У меня был - "there was at me" - I had
