Russian phrase of the day: Одна баба сказала

How much impact has a fact that one hears from somebody somewhere and believed it fully and without doubts is that truth or no. The Russian phrase "Одна баба сказала" literally means "one woman said" but more correct meanins is "somebody said" or "one said", there is even an abbriveation ОБС.

For example:

Одна баба сказала, что Дональд Трамп расист - Somebody said that Donald Trump is a racist. (It means that someboy said, you believed, you didn't check the proof). Sorry for political example, this is just an example, not more!

Одна баба сказала, что синоптики обещали похолодание - One said that weathermans promised cooling. (Again, one said, one believed, and one didn't check if it's true).

"Это ОБС!" - This is одна баба сказала! - recursive expression.

Russian tongue-twisters

Have you already become fluent in Russian, or just want to have a good accent? There are a lot of crazy tongue-twisters in Russian language and I will gather some most popular of them. Definitely, not all native speakers can pronounce them without miskates, but can be just funny!

СКОРОГОВОРКА - Tongue twister

На дворе трава,
На траве дрова.
Не руби дрова
На траве двора.

Translation: grass in the yard, woods on the grass, don't chop the woods, on the yard's grass.

Корабли лавировали, лавировали, да не вылавировали.

Translation: the ships maneuvered, maneuvered but have not maneuvered.

Ехал Грека через реку.
Видит Грека в реке рак.
Сунул в реку руку Грека.
Рак за руку Грека — цап.

Translation(my translation with rhyme): Greka's going through the river, Greka sees a crawfish there, Greka put his hand to river, crawfish snatched Greka's hand.

Карл у Клары украл кораллы,
А Клара у Карла украла кларнет.
Если бы Карл не крал у Клары кораллы,
То Клара не крала б у Карла кларнет.

Translation: Carl stole Clara's corals, and Clara stole Carl's clarinet, If Carl didn't steal Clara's corals, then Clara would not steal Carl's clarinet.

Introductory words in Russian language

There are many introductory words in Russian language. According to grammatical rules, one must separate them by comma always. Let's see some of them:

ИТАК - so, ...;

ДЕЙСТВИТЕЛЬНО - Indeed;

ОДНАКО - However;

ДРУГИМИ СЛОВАМИ - In other words;

К СЧАСТЬЮ - Fortunately;

К СОЖАЛЕНИЮ - Unfortunately;

ГОВОРЯТ - One says;

There are more than hundred introductory words in Russian language, but there are the most often used ones. Also, most of those "hundreds" of introductory words are literally translated to their English analogues.

Итак, говорят, что, к счастью, в Русском языке много вводных слов. - So, one says, that, fortunately, there are many introductory words in Russian language.

Remember, that introductory words are always(before and after) separated by commas.

There are many ways to say "still" in Russian language

There is the word "still" in English, there is the word "Todavia" in Spanish, and tehre are many words in Russian that have the same meaning. It is interesting, that we can undestand eah other using just one word in one language but it would be not enough to use just one word in another one. So, here you are:

ВСЁ ЕЩЕ - still, just still;

ВСЁ - still, short version of всё еще;

ЕЩЕ - still, also short version of всё еще;

ДО СИХ ПОР - still, it means that an action was performed in the past and is being cuntinuing in the present moment;

The dispute between ИХ and ИХНИЙ

There are many controversional things in Russian language, and one of them is the dispute between ИХ and ИХНИЙ. Both of these words mean "their", but ИХ is not conjugated by cases and ИХНИЙ is. What is the dispute about? Almost any sertified teacher of Russian language with appropriate professional education or a philologist will say you that "There is not the word ИХНИЙ in Russian language! it is wrong!". Some of these teachers even despice the people who pronounce this word. In pages of grammatical fanatics in vk.com(popularest social network in CIS countries) will speak up agressively against the word ИХНИЙ!

However, the majority use this word more and more. Because the language is being changed with the time and official grammatical rules sometimes fall beind. For example, today we don't use the word "to be" in present tense in Russian language like it was in use some hundreds years ago, when the language sounded differently.

Being inside the society of native speakers of Russian, you will surely hear this word. "One cannot simply not to make mistakes in Russian language".
