How to learn Russian language with right approach

Once you probably has got an idea - to learn a new language, and then decided that this language is Russian. Well, you probably heard all those scary tales that Russian language is so difficult that it makes student cry. Let's figure out what is true and what is wong about Russian language learning.

So, you have heard such story, and the first doubt fell down into your mind - should I eventually spend time for that? Well, this is "one chick said" or "odna baba skazala"(rus. idiom) method of mind control -i.e. somebody said, you believed, and didn't find out yourself. But I am gonna bring a piece of hope into this doubt. Russian language learning can be not as difficult as you think, because key-phrase here is right approach. Where should you start to learn Russian language to make it easy and fast? Well, definitely not from conversational langauge, but if not, where from? The answer is - from its essential grammar. And it is not all, you should have a ready algorythm, e.g. : 1) verbs in present tense 2)verbs in past and future 3)cases of nouns etc. And this plan must be well structurized. Most of Russian textbooks don't have well structurized plans, a lot of existing textbooks offer you to learn what to say to a waiter in a restaurant and after that learn new words, and then to learn cases of nouns, then verbs in present tense, then vocabulary and phrasebook for a hotel. I am pretty sure that such approach is nonsence!

Good structurization of Russian learning plan will improve not only your Russian language skills but also logical thinking. These skills will help in sorting any kind of information, writing skills, study plans, and many other stuff. With help of knowing the Russian Essential grammar you will be able to talk to a waiter in a restaurant with confidence knowing what you are talking about, while knowing only a phrase from a phrasebook can cause total misunderstanding.

There are ready solutions for learning Russian language, the book Russian language in 25 lessons contains perfectly structurized course of Russian language, it will walk you from verb conjugation to knowing the structure of the language in right algorythm. The book is short enough - 130 pages, with many examples for each subject. However it doesn't mean that after those lessons you will be a fluent, as well as after a 500 page course, but the good practice of each of the 25 lessons is a straight way to get confident in Russian!

Another book - Russian Essential Grammar and Conversational Language is an  ultimate handbook for learning Russian language adapted for a learner of any level, for a beginner as well as an advanced. It is also well structurized, but the difference from the previous one is that all subject belong to the categories: "verbs, nouns, adjectives, prepositions, pronouns, conversational language". With this book a reader can organise an order of lessons himself and jump to any subject that is needed in a moment.

Also, I want to remind that this site contains 15 free lessons that can be very helpful for a Russian Language learner of any level, anybody can find something helpful there. Learn Russian language knowing how to learn! Also, if you have questions, ask in comments or in the chat!

НАДЕВАТЬ и ОДЕВАТЬ - the Russian words that can cause grammatical butt-hurt

There 2 similar words: НАДЕВАТЬ - to wear, and ОДЕВАТЬ - to dress. Many native speakers of Russian, would even say that most of native speakers use them grammatically incorrect, and I have to admit that I do it too. НАДЕВАТЬ is used as "to dress" and ОДЕВАТЬ is used as "to wear". In English these words are different, but in Russian are quite similar.

So, what is correct and what is incorrect? Let's see the examples:

НАДЕНЬ ШАПКУ - wear a cap!  - grammatically correct

ОДЕНЬ ШАПКУ - dress a cap! - grammatically incorrect

However, НАДЕНЬ ШАПКУ and ОДЕНЬ ШАПКУ always have the same sense - wear a cap!

And this tiny grammatical trick often causes a butt-hurt from radical linguists and gramatic scholars. One can meet agressive callings to ban and punish everybody who use these words incorrect (but I suppose they do it too and don't notice). However many people say as they want and don't think about it at all, and to be honest, it doesn't discredit. Anyway, it will not change anything, the grammar rules will rather be changed to actual condition of the languge than "illiterate speech" will be restricted!

Well, not all "grammatically incorrect" things are "colloquially incorrect" too. Language is being changed every year and every day. Hundred years ago there were words that one doesn't use anymore. Accept it or not - a ersonal decidion.

odet and nadet in russian language

10 words = 1000 phrases! Do you really need to know thousands of words to speak Russian?

Did you know, that knowing just 10 words gives you an opportunity to make 1000+ phrases?

Let’s select 10 words, and let’s suppose that we can use any of these words as many times as we need in a sentence. And, we also can use all prepositions, question words and the verb БЫТЬ - “to be” apart from these 10 words, because prepositions, question words and “to be” connect everything in a language.

Let’s consider an example.

And let’s build phrases:

Самолёт был большой и женщина на машине купила телефон и книгу и смотрела на дорогу  The airplane was big and the woman in car bought a phone and a book and looked at the road

Самолёт быстрее чм машина, но женщина смотрела на машину в книге An airplane is faster than a car, but the woman looked at the car in the book.

Машина была большая но самолёт был быстрым The car is big but the airplane is fast.

Женщина купила телефон и смотрела на машину и большой самолёт The woman bought a phone and looked at the car and big airplane.

Some of these sentences look like nonsense, but this is just an exercise, and there is place for “grammatically correct nonsense” used for training. And you can make hundreds and thousands of phrases knowing just these 10 words and  using them with prepositions with question words and the verb “to be”. It is a good way to improve sentence building skills, skills of declension by cases, genders, plural/singular(depending of a language), conjugation of verbs. And also it will help to memorize these 10 words that you selected.

Lack of articles in Russian language, and what it makes

There are not defined and undefined articles (a, the) in Russian language, there are not articles at all. And what difference does it make with languages that have them?

First of all, let's define what articles A, THE in English mean:

"A/AN" is actually short version of "ONE", and "THE" is short version of "THIS".

If you want to buy a pizza in English language, you say "Give me a pizza please" or "give me this pizza please".And in Russian language one says ДАЙТЕ МНЕ ПИЦЦУ ПОЖАЛУЙСТА - give me a pizza please. And a russian seller will probably ask you: СКОЛЬКО - how many? This is what loss of articles in Russian language means - if you ask for pizza, you will be asked "how many?" because you don't say one or two etc. Sometimes when I speak English for long time, I feel lack of articles in Russian and when I switch to my native language I wanna add a/the to Russian words, Haha!
