A tooth root abscess is a very painful condition and needs to be treated as soon as possible. Antibiotics will be prescribed to control the infection and either an anti-inflammatory or an analgesic will be prescribed to help with the soreness. Although this medical treatment will deal with the symptoms, it will not treat the underlying tooth injury.

A skin abscess may be treated by a primary care provider (PCP), such as a general practitioner, family medicine specialist, internist, or pediatrician. One may also be seen by an emergency medicine specialist in a hospital emergency department. If surgery is required, a general surgeon can treat an abscess. A dermatologist, who specializes in disorders of the skin, may also treat a skin abscess.
